about

Also known as SoundScroll II, several musicians have commented that this is the most beautiful of the “SoundScrolls” pieces. It is nonetheless always just this side of disaster. During one performance, the gong didn’t resonate properly because of a gaping dent. At the same concert, a mallet head fell off and rolled out among the audience. In a solo version at an open mike, I had some of it on tape -- and the DJ made a point of ignoring all of my cues to start the tape. During this recording, I accidentally dropped a mallet into a percussion bowl, but the resulting clatter goes with the music so I didn’t edit it out. A true aleatory moment!
